A photo frame also works for either sex (with a photo of you in it, of course); it seems to be the present that’s always welcome. Aah, vases. We can never have too many: tall, small, plain or decorated. Buy one or more of our many, many vases in store and an armful of flowers – forget roses, too obvious – but do make it one type,
one colour. According to the Victorians, tulips are also a sign of love (but not yellow, that’s hopeless love); ranunculas tell you someone is dazzled by your charms; orange lilies denote passion, while arum lilies represent ardour (also passion!). Steer well clear of hydrangeas.*
